Joel Baehr: Minister at Unity Church of Mesa

So my question is this, What are you curious about, about me?  I figure you are interested in my religious perspectives since you are reading this.  So we’ll start a while back.

I grew up in Bluffton, Ohio, went to a Mennonite Church and graduated from Bluffton University.  Then I left home - where I was a conscientious objector - and joined the United States Marine Corps.  This broadened my education and I’m glad to say that I got out of both Bluffton and the USMC alive!  I went back to school for another four years and ended up an ordained Unity minister – which I still am today.

Personally, I’ve been married more than once and finally got it right with a wonderful woman named Robin.  We have ten grown assorted children divided equally between the two of us.

Philosophically, I’m in a continual process of change.  My religion is my consciousness of living my best at any particular moment.  My teaching is to help others live the best lives they can dream up for themselves.  I find the “Truth” in the Bhagavad Gita, the teachings of Buddha, and elegantly  revealed by Jesus (as well as in other places like a dog’s eyes).

What I’m about - is realizing that “preaching” to others is more about my own growth than theirs.  That growth means seeing Presence looking back at me through every person and experience in my life.  I know there is no judgment in Spirit so I am free to do whatever I choose – and then observe the effects to see how I might tweak my choices.  This works for me and I keep practicing - and life keeps getting better and better.

If you are a philosophical adventurer you might enjoy coming to church some Sunday.  We would love to have you.  We don’t do typical church hymns but have an awesome jazz pianist, wonderful singers, a brief time to meditate, we take an offering and I give a “lesson.”  Then we sing Let There be Peace on Earth and go out to our “Garden” behind the Church to have refreshments and socialize.  We have a great Youth Ed Department for kids.  If you want to know more, call 480-892-2700 or visit www.unityofmesa.org.  Hope to see you in church!
